Barbara Strozzi was a 17th century, groundbreaking composer of sensual, dramatic & unusual songs. Giulio Strozzi, Barbara Strozzi’s father, led an academic study group for whom she acted as hostess, performed, and composed music. A famous painting of Strozzi depicts her with one breast bared and flowers in her hair, holding the gaze of the viewer – all of which were indicators that she was a courtesan. Several satires were published about the musical and intellectual meetings that she hosted at her father’s house, where ‘clothes were optional’.
The programme will explore whether these accusations were fair, or whether they were a response to society’s inability to place a strong successful woman such as Barbara Strozzi, who published more than almost any other composer at the time.
