Holly & Helen – Flute & Piano Recital

Our first concert of 2017 sees the return of Broadstone Music Series regular, pianist Helen Nicholas, performing with Holly Cook.

Graduates of Trinity Laban and the Royal Academy of Music, Holly and Helen have received high praise from concert societies and audiences across London and the UK. Notable performances include recitals at the Royal Opera House, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Bridgewater Hall and Cheltenham Town Hall. As a Richard Carne Junior Fellow at Trinity Laban, Holly expresses a particular interest for non-Western influences and ethnic instruments. Former Jette Parker Young Artist Helen brings her affinity with French contemporary music to the duo.

holly-cook-02As a freelance flautist, Holly performs on a number of non-Western flutes and whistles, in addition to the classical flute. Her career to date has included a mentorship with the BBC Concert Orchestra with principal flautist Ileana Ruheman, and performances on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and Late Junction. She has recorded on Katie Melua’s 2013 album Ketevan, and her whistle playing features on folk band Skinny Lister’s albums Forge and Flageon (2011) and Down on Deptford Broadway (2014). She has also performed on a number of flutes, panpipes and whistles at the Spitalfields Music Festival, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and in ENO’s John Cage Musicircus, and is a deputy on Thursford Christmas Spectacular show. Holly was awarded an Emerging Excellence Award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund in 2012, and completed a role as the Richard Carne Junior Fellow at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance during 2011 – 2012.

img_9487editedHelen has appeared as a soloist with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and has worked as a freelance accompanist for the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme since 2013. Her association with the Royal Opera House began in 2012, when she was selected to be the first ever ballet pianist on the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme. Outside of her duo partnership with flautist Holly Cook, she performs as part of ‘Trio Asana’ (BSO strings) and with singers from the Royal Opera House. She is an accompanist for the woodwind faculty at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and audition pianist for the Royal Academy of Music. As an orchestral pianist, she freelances with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Southbank Sinfonia. Helen released her first solo album in 2014 titled ‘The Debut’, featuring the piano works of Ravel, Beethoven, Scarlatti, Chopin and Debussy.
