Recital January 2016

Trio Asana

Our first concert of 2016 sees the return of Broadstone Music Series regular, pianist Helen Nicholas, performing with musicians from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in Trio Asana on 23rd January 2016.

Trio Asana open their concert with the Kakadu (cockatoo) Variations by Beethoven. This is an amusing set of variations based on a popular song from the early 1800s.

Next on the programme is Debussy’s Piano Trio which is an early work in a light and lyrical style. The 18 year old Debussy was travelling with a family as resident teacher/pianist. He wrote this piece for his young charges and their talented friends.

The Dumky Trio by Dvorak is the most well known piece on the programme. The Dumkas are alternately slow and fast music which is easily accessible but not without deep running emotion throughout. It has been one of his most popular works since its first performance.

Concert: Out of the Shadows – Fieri Consort

Fieri Consort sing unaccompanied in a diverse range of styles, they are a seven strong, wonderfully talented vocal ensemble from London, some of you will also recognise Hannah Ely, who has joined the Broadstone Music Series previously, both as a soprano and as an accompanying pianist, Hannah is a originally a local girl and we are delighted welcome  her back to the series.

– Out of the Shadows –  takes us on a musical journey tracking the  he transition from darkness to light:  from the intense expressions of the murderous composer – Prince Carlo Gesualdo, the tortuous chromaticism of Lassus’ Sibylline Prophecies and chilling music from English composers including Gibbons’ ‘What is our life?’, a text written by Sir Walter Raleigh whilst awaiting execution in the Tower of London; to the searingly beautiful harmonies of 21st-century MacMillan, and the radiant compositions of William Byrd.

Included are some rare gems of the choral repertoire, with highlights such as a setting of the oldest known hymn, the greek text ‘Phos Hilaron’ (‘O Gladsome Light’), as well as American shape note-singing, a stark and wonderfully anachronistic style preserved nearly intact from early settlers and not often heard outside of the puritanical traditions of the deep south.

Mozart’s Magic Flute – Sponsored by VocalZone

Oh what a night our performance turned out to be.  We knew it would be good, but it just blossomed into something quite amazing. We had some fantastic feedback from the audience and our young soloists were wonderful and they had a great experience working with Lynton Atkinson.  Here are some pictures (thank you Nigel Apperley) from the evening.   If you came along, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
